Abstract

The research was developed using qualitative methodology, carrying out twenty five in-depth interviews with adult females, residents of the Murcia region, of Spanish nationality, who have been victims of domestic abuse at the hands of a partner, and who have agreed to participate. The overall objective was to understand the process of leaving the abusive relationship. The specific objectives were: 1) To identify the attitudes and aims of the women in the process, 2) To identify attitudes of the people close to her, 3) Identify which institutions or professionals took part in the process and how this intervention contributed to the same. The WHO recommendations on ethics and safety for research on violence against women have been taken into account. The interviews were collected with prior informed consent. At the time of interview, the ages of the women ranged from 19 to 64 years of age. Twenty three of the women had separated from their aggressors, while two of them maintained the affected relationship. The majority had offspring. The sample ranged from women who had not completed compulsory education to others who were university graduates. A small number were housewives and the majority were also in paid employment. Some lived in urban areas and others in rural. The abuser had been the husband in the majority of cases, in others it was a live-in partner and in four cases it was the victim’s boyfriend. The abused women always attempted to avoid the aggressions of their partner but because of their learned gender roles the answers they gave were never effective. Some of the women attempted suicide as a consequence of the abuse. All of the interviewed women eventually found themselves in a dangerous situation and lost faith in the relationship, which is why they decided to separate from their partner. Fear, the mourning of their own traditional ideals, the opinion of relatives and friends, the religious community, in-laws, and young children were major obstacles to the process. Recognizing negative changes in themselves, building relationships with people who appreciate them, learning from their experiences, putting boundaries on others, children close to adolescence age, and seeking professional help were factors that contributed to the breakdown of the couple. The immediate family as well as the in-laws were fundamental for all of the women interviewed, as much for what they did, as for what they did not do. Many of them hid it from their immediate family, so they could not be of support to them before the breakdown of the couple. However, they did provide a great amount of support during the separation and in the aftermath, a dangerous time for women. The involvement of the in-law family, when there, was almost always negative. Also the people in the environment, their opinions and actions proved decisive. If their opinion was in favour of maintaining the relationship, the woman prolonged her silence and suffering, increasing the isolation and blame. If her relatives are critical of the abuse, it allows her become aware of her situation sooner, decreases guilt, gives recognition as a person with self worth and who deserves to be believed. Most women report having had problems with public services, while recognizing that they need to speak with some professional. When they are the ones who decide which service to use and when, the services prove very useful. Leaving the abusive relationship involves a change in the woman, a change in the relationship with oneself, with others, that is, a disidentification with the hegemonic role of gender. The women studied understand, at the end of the process, the strategy of the abuser and that domestic violence was the cause of their hardship.
