Abstract

This research is situated in the initial process of teacher trainees, focusing on the practicum experience, considered a key factor of this process. We assume a social constructivist theoretical perspective, based on Vygotsky’s (1983) contribution to educational practices. Our aim is to contribute to a better understanding of how university tutors foster joint activity to help practicum students develop autonomy to reflect on their own pedagogic practice, which is performed in an actual teaching and learning context. This concern led us to break down our work into three goals: firstly, to identify, characterize and analyse how joint activity between a tutor and practicum students is built in order to identify educational assistance; secondly, to identify on which aspects of their practice as trainees the joint activity is focus; thirdly, identify and characterize changes in the way trainees reflect spontaneously on a given pedagogical practice. We chose a qualitative methodology underpinned by the interpretive paradigm, with a multiple case study. The participants are two tutors and six practicum students of preschool education from the Universidad de Concepción, Chile. We registered and analysed two types of tutoring (individual and group) that have the particularity that both the university tutor and student (or group of students) jointly reflect on the educational practice that the latter perform in the classroom. The individual tutoring aims to assess a practice session performed by the practicum student at the school while being observed by the university tutors, while in the group tutoring, tutor and classmates observe the practice of the analysed student through a videoclip during the session. In order to reach our objectives, we first conducted a joint activity analysis (Coll, Colomina, Onrubia & Rochera, 1992), and secondly, a content analysis (Flick, 2007; Krippendorff, 1980). The first level of analysis allowed us to identify, in each type of tutoring, different interactivity segments that characterize the joint activity built among the participants, highlighting those segments that are oriented to the analysis of the educational practice (and those specific segments in each type of tutoring). On the other hand, the results allowed us to identify regular patterns and educational assistance provided by the studied tutors to scaffold the students´ reflective process. The second level of analysis, centered on the content that appears in the joint activity, allowed us to recognize a different evolution related to the epistemic function of the practice analysis in each type of tutoring. On one hand, “description” appears mostly in the individual tutoring, “assessment” and “proposals for change” appear mostly in the group tutoring -in all the studied cases- while “interpretation” has a low presence in both types of tutoring. In both group and individual tutoring, interpretation has a low presence. Furthermore, these findings show that the studied tutors adjust their assistance favouring the degree of their students’ participation so that they develop more autonomy in the reflective learning process. This varies from one tutor to the next in relation to theirs students´ initiative management. On the other hand, we identified changes in the way the students refer to the different pedagogical fields when they reflect on a given teaching practice at the beginning and at the end of the practicum period, showing a more elaborated discourse towards the end, and making connections among the contents in question. Finally, in relation to the use of the video clip and the assessment rubric in the tutoring, differences in the mediating role of these artifacts for joint reflection on the teaching practice were identified in the studied cases. The rubric was used to systematize the agreements of the formative and accumulative evaluation. As for the video clips, it should be emphasized that they were used to encourage participation, and to establish common criteria on the reflection of the practice, thus contributing to the process of sharing meanings about what is observed on the clip. In conclusion, these findings confirm that joint activity is built in the interaction between tutor and student in these tutoring situations; even though the tutors share the same teaching program, there are variations in how they approach the practice reflection, the provided educational assistance and the content on which these aids are provided.
