Abstract

In this thesis, music is analysed as a socio-cultural phenomenon. This implies different levels of analysis focused on: 1) the organization and systematization of sounds; 2) the behaviour of individuals and communities; 3) the ideas and symbolism associated; and 4) the functions of musics in society. To consider these four levels of analysis involves a holistic study that puts into relation, in a very diverse ways, the musical structures and the mental structures, always in coherence regarding the social context of reference. In this thesis, we want to contribute in a significant way to this approach posing the case of the Romanian Moldavia. Through the multi-level analysis of nine musical genres, making a special effort on four of them (muzică populară, manele, folk-metal and muzică bisericească), we are going to present different ways of demarcation of the ethnic identities in this context. By means of the confrontation of data obtained from participant observation and interviews, recursive discursive patterns are observed. These refer to collective imaginaries about those musics and, at the same time, trigger stereotyped behaviours and attitudes. In the first chapter a bibliographic review on identity, community, ethnicity and nationalism is carried out together with some fundamental methodological premises in relation to the musical phenomenon. These are the consideration of music as culture (Merriam, 1964) and as a symbolic system (Feld & Fox, 1994; Martí i Pérez, 2000; Merriam, 1964). A multi-level perspective for the study of the musical phenomenon is proposed (Cruces, 2002; Martí i Pérez, 2000; Merriam, 1964) as well as an epistemological model consisting of four levels of analysis: the structural-form, the attitudinal-behavioural, the symbolic-conceptual and the structural-functional. In the second and third chapters some historic, geographic and socio-cultural keys are given in order to contextualize the cultural analysis of music. The relevant dimensions of identity in this context are discussed: the imaginary link with territory, the relevance of language and the role of religion, as well as the importance of the folkloric culture and the multi-ethnicity. In the fourth chapter some key aspects of the design of the research are described such as the entry in the field and the main reasons why the Moldavia region was chosen to do this research are explained. In the fifth chapter a brief historical overview is presented in order to explain the cultural musical spheres which have contributed to the establishment of aesthetic predominant trends. We will discuss the repercussion of the socialist and post-socialist periods in contemporary musical cultures and we will analyse the way in which ethnicities, both the minorities and hegemonies, are represented through the activities proposed from politic and educational institutions. In the sixth chapter we will deepen into the muzică populară, the muzică bisericească (religious music), the manele and the folk-metal. The structural elements as well as those which refer to the symbolic-conceptual level will be described. In the seventh chapter the analysis will be approached focused on the ways of systematization and organization, in the polyphonies and heterophonies, the relationship between music and dance and, finally, in the musical instruments and the common formations. In the eighth chapter the analysis of musical genre from the levels mentioned will be proposed, focused especially on their function as agents of romanianness, that is, as musical phenomena whose symbolic representation refer to the conceptual frame of the Romanian ethno-nationalism.
