Abstract

All education is a preparation for the future. Actually, the past and the present are the temporal categories which receive more attention in social studies. Considering this, the construction and the work of social representations of the future are held on the media and the experiences outside the educational system, leading into a missing dimension in the students education. The education for the future belongs to the so called future studies, known in Europe as prospective. The main goal of this field is to analyze the past and the present, in order to make forecasts and predictions for the future. Its application in the classroom is based on a series of proposed futures such as possible, probable or desirable, to analyze, evaluate their advantages and disadvantages, and trace the steps to achieve them. The teaching of social studies is done through education for the citizenship, history and geography. And directly contributes to the work of social and civic competences, contributing to the formation of an active and responsible citizenship, capable of helping to the development and welfare of the society. History, for example, helps the development of the historical consciousness, the tool that lets us to us the past in order to understand the future and project ourselves into the future. The investigation I am introducing is from the field of social studies didactics. It was carried out during the school year 2010-2011. It involved three secondary schools in Catalonia, all from different areas and characteristics. We worked with a total of 172 students and four teachers from the fourth year of secondary school. The research was implemented in three phases: the development of a theoretical framework and a conceptual structure to work the concept of future and the inquiry of students social representations of the future; the application of a teaching sequence; the triangulation of the instruments and the interpretation of the data. During the investigation, the students shown great conviction that experiences and education help them to build their future, they also believed that the future is open. Their views didn’t correspond to their participation in the classroom or in their social environment. The analysis of social representations enabled us to identify the differences between the thinking of the personal future and the global future. That analysis also let us distinguish four types of students according to their images of the future. On the application of the teaching sequence, the students completed different activities that enabled them to work with the concept of future. The teaching unit provided a number of situations in which students had to use their historical knowledge, their analysis of reality and their images of the future. The work allowed the students to use their time and historical consciousness, and its prospects of change and continuity, projecting themselves in the future. Letting us to fill the missing dimension we mentioned above. Working with the future in the classroom allow the students to develop a range of attitudes and skills, like the creative and critical thinking and the decision making. Educating for social change implies to train citizens for democratic participation, but mainly to promote a different image of the future. This requires not to forget what this new image expects from us, and how we should reach it.
