Abstract

In 2012 the mathematics curriculum for primary education in Chile changed substantially, one of these changes is the entry of a new curriculum axes, measurement, which brings learning objectives involving measurement estimation. Considering that measurement estimation is a concept whose definitions have differences and ambiguities and, thanks to our experience, we know it is a topic which has not been part of teacher training, we find it interesting that primary school teachers have to teach this new topic without preparation. Accordingly, we confirm that teaching measurement estimation is not an issue with a great deal of research in the didactics of mathematics (Benton, 1986; Sowder., 1992; Callis et al, 2006 ). Of the limited existing studies, few look into the teaching-learning process or have indicated the need to investigate the knowledge didactics of the teacher. For these reasons, our study seeks to answer the following research objective: "to characterize the pedagogical knowledge that primary school teachers have about the estimation of discrete and continuous measurements". We present a collection of the most relevant research on measurement estimation and a brief description of the Mathematics Teacher's Specialized Knowledge (MTSK), the reference framework that contextualizes the teacher knowledge in our study. Based on the participation of 112 primary school teachers who participated in the descriptive and interpretive study we achieved the research goal through two mechanisms: 1. A definition of the concept of measurement estimation based on three components: referencing (R), perception (P) and valuation (V) 2. Distinctions between the tasks of estimation versus measurement to determine a value. From this, we specify that the pedagogical knowledge content of teachers is characterized by using, indistinctly, three tasks for estimating: 1. Estimation of measurement: Using referencing (R), perception (P) and valuation (V) 2. Measuring with non-standard units or counting: Using referencing (R) and valuation (V) 3. Valuation: Using perception (P) and valuation (V) These three tasks for estimating are used interchangeably by teachers in both the application and use of the concept, as in their knowledge of teaching and learning. We believe that this situation is due to the lack of ownership of the components of referencing (R) and perception (P) by the teachers.
