Abstract

The Catalan university has undergone major changes in recent decades, both in terms of the number and type of university students and the regulation of access and degrees. The context of democratization and massification of university system highlights the need for analysis of horizontal differences, as a source of differentiation and segmentation of education within the university level. Based on this framework the thesis deals with three objectives: a) explore the evolution of the social composition of freshmen students and the access strategies they set, taking into account contextual changes occurred, b) identify the extent to which different access strategies respond to different profiles of students, emphasizing the social background as a differentiating factor, and c) analyze the main elements that trigger these differences in the set of the access strategies according to profiles. This research uses the concept of access strategy as the basis for horizontal differentiation within the university. The access strategy has been defined as an intentional, interconnected and adaptive process, that student performs related to educational choice in what to study (the type of degree) and how (dedication, attitude ...). It is a risk-management process that the student faces at university access, risk associated with the possibility of failing in his/her studies. The access strategies are the result of an articulation of different elements: the motivation of the student, and the objective and perceived risk. In addition, the institutional, socio-economical and biographical contexts where these choices are made are not the same at any moment for any student. The thesis proposes a mixed-method based on the analysis of register data of access to the public universities in Catalonia between 2002 and 2014, with special focus on the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and semi-structured interviews to 1st year students of 4 degrees by 2016. The results show that some student profiles have reduced their weight in university at a higher rate than the rest, especially if were studying lower risk degrees in terms of difficulty and price. They belong mainly to the profiles of elderly students, women, alternative access routes and low social background. This process is accentuated in recent years in parallel with the rising prices in 2012. There was also a significant increase in part-time dedication, going from 8% to 18% of low social background students who are studying Engineering. It has also increased the proportion of low social background students who undertake work while studying. The analysis carried out provide us tools for better understanding the horizontal differences within the university system. In 2014 fragile students kept designing minor risk strategies. They took courses of lesser difficulty and price, assumed more part-time dedication and worked during studies rather than other student profiles. A qualitative analysis has identified some patterns that would have triggered these behaviours, such as the underestimation of academic capacities, the feeling of being in indebted to the relatives, the lower economic resources, or the different aspirations and influences of third persons. The result is that different student profiles set different access strategies within university as a source of educational differentiation, being the social background an increasingly important factor.
