Abstract

The thesis is part of an international project about ancient territories studies promoted by the International Union Academy and undertaken, in Catalonia, by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans: the Forma Orbis Romani.
The aim of the thesis is to study the ancient population of the Laietania coast between the Besòs and the Riera de Caldes. Therefore, territories marked by the presence of the roman cities of Baetulo (Badalona) and Iluro (Mataró).
The numerous excavations and prospective surveys that have been carried out in this area, have revealed important findings. Now, with the advent of new technologies, namely GIS (Geographical Information System) has began to excell as a tool with high potencial, when applied to the ancient territories studies. Therefore, updating the existent dates and applying the GIS to their study, we have tried to explore the possibilities of advance in the knowledge of these territories.
The thesis is structurated in three main parts:
- The research methodology, with a large part devoted to the GIS.
- The database with 504 indexed card sites.
- The spatial and evolutive study of the territory
With the GIS, we were able to relate the sites database with a digital cartography of the ICC and with a digital elevation model of the territory. In this way, we have created thematic site maps; analytic maps with Thiessen polygons and territorial exploitation areas; maps with intervisibility analysis, and stadistic graphics.
Starting from this documentation, we have studied comparatively Baetulo and Iluro territories, and we have endevoured to determine population evolution through the iberian, republican, imperial and late imperial periods.
In the Baetulo territory we have evidence of an iberian population structured in mountain settlements and in their environments. Though, we can not rule out that there may have been some dispersed farms. The visibility analisis shown: that from the settlements they controled the whole territory; that they had intervisibility relations, that we must interpret as a very well structurated network of comunications, essentialy defensive; and that each settlement had a specific function within the society.
In the Iluro territory we can see a different iberian landscape basically structured in mountain settlements and in their environments. Also, there existed some plain settlements with very specific functions as with pottery. We can not rule out the presence of some other plain establishments. The visibility analisis has shown, that from the mountain settlements they were not able to completely control the territory. Moreover, the mountain settlements did not have intervisibility relations. These combined facts could be interpreted as a different dinamic of territory control. Though, there is the possibility that these settlements were integrated with others that were situated in the Vallès, out of our study area. Like this, they could have formed a network similar to that detected in Baetulo area.
The republican period is characterised by the spread of rural plain settlements (although we can not dismiss the fact that some of them had previous origins). The environment of Baetulo was void of settlements, in contrast to the populated envionment of Iluro. The different distribution of these settlements, in relation to the towns, and their dating, suggest an hypothesis. The population of the Baetulo plain seems to have been older than that of Iluro. We can also deduce that the foundation of the town of Baetulo may have been preceded by the population of its plain territory. However, in Iluro it seems to have been an important plain population in the s.II B.C., before Iluro was founded and, also, in the following century, in relation to the town fundation.
In the imperial period there was the consolidation of the model introduced in the republican period: the rise of the plain population; the iberian mountain settlements had been deserted; and there appeared a new kind of settlements: the villa. In the Iluro area we have detected a higher growth population at the beginning of the empire than in Baetulo. That could corroborate that the Iluro lanscape was constituted latter.
During the late imperial period, we can emphasize an important decrease in the population and the villae prominence. These factors indicate a general process of property concentration. We can find its origin in the s.III A.D. and, mainly, in the adjustment to new productive sistems that must have involved the end of the trade upon which the economy was based until that moment.
