El libro español en París a comienzos del siglo XX. Escritores i traductores.

Abstract

En esta tesis, se estudian las editoriales que publicaron en París, en lengua española, la obra de varios escritores españoles e hispanoamericanos: novelas, publicaciones pedagógicas, filosóficas, técnicas, diccionarios y traducciones del francés al castellano. Se evocan las razones del florecimiento del libro español en París entre los años 1890 y 1930: calidad de la edición parisina, atracción y prestigio de la “Ciudad Luz”. Se destaca la labor de todos estos españoles que emigraron por razones políticas, en búsqueda de aventura, o para conocer la entonces “capital del mundo. También se hace referencia a sus recursos económicos, sus tretas para sobrevivir –que recuerdan la picaresca más tradicional– sus añoranzas y su obra en la capital francesa, resaltando algunas figuras literarias españolas. La traducción –principal fuente de ingresos– se estudia en dos capítulos. Este trabajo combina la investigación sobre el mercado del libro español en París con el estudio sociológico de sus protagonistas en una época muy concreta: “la Belle Époque” y “Les Années Folles”.

In this thesis, the publishing houses which published the work of various Spanish and Latin-American writers are studied. These works include novels, pedagogical, philosophical and technical books, dictionaries and translations from French to Spanish. The research covers the period from the last decade of the XIXth century until the formation of the Spanish Republic (1930). It attempts to identify the sociological factors and the market share of the Spanish book industry in Paris: the quality of publication and the attraction of this cultural center for intellectuals. A chapter is dedicated to the Spaniards who lived there during this period, concentrating upon their means, lifestyle and work in the city. Their main source of income was translation work, so characteristics of translation work and its market are studied. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the fact that this period (“la Belle Epoque” and “les Années Folles”) was a privileged moment for cultural life in Paris and for the publication of Spanish.
