Abstract

Until the 1950s, adolescents were not a major market segment in the US (Lipovetsky, 2012). Young people and children consumed what their parents purchased for them. However, this changed radically at the end of the last century and the beginning of the 21st century. According to Juliet B. Schor, adolescents are currently the most concerned about purchases and brands (Schor, 2004). In 2004, an American child between the ages of 8 and 13 watched an average of three hours of television a day, about 40,000 advertisements and made more than 3000 requests for products and services. It has been 12 years since these studies and today our adolescents and children in Latin America should not be far from these figures and the reality presented by Schor. The massification of the internet and the media has contributed to the rise of famous people, exacerbating the 'worship' and monitoring of their lives and activities by the public. If the so-called celebrities have become referents for children and young people, marketing and advertising have empowered these strategies, thus forming a 'perfect and harmonious' union of two relevant and powerful elements that are shaped as referents of what especially children and young people want to have and to be. Based on the above, this study presents a comparative analysis of brands and celebrities preferred by adolescents. Likewise, it seeks to know how, through advertising, brands and media figures are shaped into symbolic referents that influence the construction of the identity of Chilean and Ecuadorian youth. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, this thesis was structured in two main parts: the first one presents the theoretical framework, which in turn is divided into three chapters: • Adolescence, identity and self-concept • Consumption, brands and advertising • Fame and celebrities In the second part, two chapters are presented: Research Project: This chapter sets out and explains the methodological project that gave substance to this research. The last chapter presents the data, results and analysis of the research, which were structured in four sub-categories: • Analysis of the brands category: The results obtained in this study confirm the interest of the adolescents by the brands, which, in addition, they consider as objects that transmit symbolic value. • Analysis of the advertising and media category: This part is oriented to investigate and corroborate the assumptions in which advertising, as the main persuasive communication tool, disseminates values beyond the mere objective of selling their products. • analysis of the celebrity category: As with brands, adolescents' preference for celebrities is highly concentrated regardless of the social status, age, sex or country of the adolescents studied. Even when footballers and singers are the most admired characters, there is an incipient fervor that begins to emerge by figures produced by social networks, such as vloggers, influencers, gamers and youtubers. • Analysis of the self-concept category: triangulation of results between self-concept and the brands, celebrities and advertising variables. The thesis ends with the conclusions that consider, in addition, the contributions of the study and its limitations, while at the same time, new areas or future lines of research are proposed.
