Abstract

This doctoral thesis has consisted mainly of the study, Latin edition and translation into Spanish of the Questiones super libro "De Animalibus" Aristotelis, unpublished work of Pedro Hispano, (1205-1277) contained in the manuscript 1877 (ff. 256 ra-290vb) of the National Library of Madrid.
Previously to its edition and translation a brief view both, of the most relevant aspects of the figure and work of Pedro Hispano has been offered. This autor is identified with Pope Juan XXI, and of the great historic moment that he lived, the XIIIth century, century of the Scholastic and the Aristotelian Renaissance.
The Questiones super libro "De Animalibus" Aristotelis, probably the oldest commentary written in Latin about the zoology of Aristotle, was discovered in 1928 by professor Martin Grabmann. Since then, really interesting aspects about this text have been studied but, nevertheless, an edition hasn´t been published so far.
The author Pedro Hispano takes as his basis the text of Aristotle through the Latin translation entitled De Animalibus, done in Toledo around 1220 by Miguel Escoto considering an Arabic text. This work, De Animalibus, included 3 important Aristotelic treatises in the Middle Ages: Historia animalium (books I-X), Partes Animalium (books XI-XIV) and Generatio Animalium (books XV-XIX).
The basis of the Questiones is the zoological work of Aristotle, nevertheless, Pedro feeds from a diverse and huge number of sources. These sources, both of authorities and Greco-Latin works, Arabic-Jewish and, of course, Christian, show that the text isn´t exclusive of zoological theme but really important medical and philosophical themes are discussed, putting on record a vast knowledge on the part of Pedro Hispano both of the Aristotelic work and of the medicine of his time.
Regarding the literary form, this text isn't exactly a commentary about animals, but rather, and as the title shows, a collection of Salernitan questions, which use was considered the most appropriate for the analysis and the communication among the scientific community of the Low Middle Ages to which, no doubt, Pedro Hispano belonged. So, in order to have a general idea of the content of these questions, the chart of contents that appears in the first sheets of the manuscript (sheets 19ra-23ra) has also been included
Likewise the editor has wanted to offer an edition practically paleographic, because after having solved the countless abbreviations found in the manuscript, she has wanted to stick to the text, correcting only some mistakes or adding some word to try to solve the difficulties that its reading offered.
Finally, some theme indexes related to the Latin text have also been included. In them have been annotated both the proper names, mainly those of the authorities and workers quoted by Pedro Hispano, and the animals names, their parts and substances, and metals, plants and their derivatives.
