Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between the Chinese population in Spain and housing in both China and Spain. Starting from the state of the arts of the characteristics of housing in China and Spain, the contextual framework is completed with a review of the research that has addressed housing and migration in Spain. In the second part, the development and characteristics of Chinese migration are presented. There are three key and differentiated segments that will be the object of analysis in order to deepen the specificities of their residential behaviour that will articulate the research: family economic migration, international students, and investors and highly skilled workers. The aspects that are developed are residential mobility, understood by one hand as changes in housing within the same city or between municipalities with phenomena such as concentrations and residential segregations; and by other hand as residential trajectories that include the transition from housing in emergency housing to residential stability through transitional housing. It also analyses strategies and practices for access to housing, from sources of information to sources of financing for the acquisition of housing and forms of payment. Finally, from testimonies collected in the field work, are presented and analysed residential trajectories both in relation to housing in Spain and China as an example of transnational links and the emerging phenomenon of real estate companies owned by Chinese migrants in the country. The work and economic activities of migrants, on the one hand, and the family life cycle, on the other, are the keys to understanding the behavior and residential mobility of the population of Chinese origin in Spain. Housing fulfils several functions throughout the migratory trajectories, as it is not only a space for accommodation but also a property in which investment is made to obtain certain economic and symbolic benefits, or access to residence permits abroad, such as those obtained through the new Law 14/2013 on Support for Entrepreneurs and their Internationalization. The research uses secondary sources -specialized books and articles, official reports and statistics- and primary data obtained through field work with participant observation and semi-structured interviews with Chinese informants. A search and analysis of web pages, virtual social networks, blogs, newspaper news, advertising, among others, has also been carried out.
