Abstract

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the historical-social study of breastfeeding in Spain and to the knowledge of the reasons that led to the progressive increase of artificial lactation during the first third of the 20th century in this country. The work provides new knowledge on the medicalization of breastfeeding and its contribution to the general process of medicalization through which non-medical problems are defined and treated as if they were, usually in terms of diseases or disorders. A process that was accentuated from the nineteenth century with the industrialization and development of capitalism accompanied by major educational and nutritional problems. First, the subject of infant feeding during the first third of the twentieth century is discussed, and it delves into the different forms of nutrition throughout history, the high infant mortality rate in this period and the protection of children with the new Drops of milk, charities in which the most disadvantaged creatures were fed. Secondly, a concrete example is being studied, such as the appearance and dissemination of Childcare in the city of Reus and in particular the figure of pediatrician Alexandre Frias Roig (1878-1963) who managed, through his “Instituto de Puericultura”, to alleviate infant mortality in this city. The following is a vision of the social context in which the woman who joined the labor world in the first third of the twentieth century and the beginning of the changes in the feeding systems of the creatures, all of which contributed to the medicalization process of breastfeeding. Subsequently, the various forms of artificial lactation are studied and the roles of the different actors who intervened during the process of social change from a breastfeeding to an artificial one are analyzed and where the dairy industry played a preponderant role. Finally, attention is focused on the dairy industry and the advertising embodied in the daily press of Madrid and Barcelona (ABC and La Vanguardia). In conclusion, in the Spanish society of the first third of the twentieth century, the establishment together with science, the dairy industry and advertising, formed an excellent symbiosis around breastfeeding whose objectives served their respective interests. Thus, despite the generalized knowledge of the scientific establishment (chemists, pharmacists and doctors) that breastfeeding was more beneficial for infants than artificial, societies were established with medical support or directly created by doctors who, under the name of "mothernized milk” they commercialized the milk of cow and disclosed their beneficial properties all of which served to substitute a breastfeeding and transform it into an artificial lactation.
