Abstract

The present work focuses on solos by new interdisciplinary stage artists that appeared on the Spanish theater scene from 2000 to 2014. After analyzing the context of independent theater arts from the 1980s on, this thesis places particular emphasis on their sociological, political, and structural framework and its effect on the circuits, production systems, and staging formats involved. As a consequence of the fragmentation of the theatre system and the lack of strategic support for new performance trends from public institutions (beyond policies concerning grants for the arts and a few alternative festivals and venues), in the midst of a global culture that leans towards individualism and narcissism, we can observe a tendency towards creative self-management and self-sufficiency: the Self, identity, and autobiography are the main point of reference, as a legacy of the national and international performance and body arts of the 1960s and 70s, where the personal was used to build a subversive, counter-cultural discourse. However, in terms of the issue of questioning identity, which had been addressed from a more political perspective throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s (La Ribot, Olga Mesa, Elena Córdoba, Angélica Liddell, Rodrigo García, etc.), or in terms of the more formalist approach adopted in new Catalan dance (with Àngels Margarit as a representative example, among others), we see less of an emphasis on conflictive subjects and more of a tendency to choose devices with a strong sense of playfulness and a significant economy of resources, in an attempt to activate the circulation of affects with the viewer, attributing greater importance to the live encounter with him or her and to co-creating the work through an active or participative reception. The body (and particularly the female body) has always been viewed as a source of desire or exclusion, and, in general, there have been more female than male artists who have addressed the conflicts that this image elicits within theater arts and visual arts. The artists who are featured as case studies in this thesis challenge the codes, themes, and narrative strategies of conventional theater, placing themselves in a peripheral context where they can rely on the understanding of an endogamous circle of like-minded researchers, viewers, and fellow artists. The concepts of the fiction of the self, the poetry of experience, and the poetry of intimacy are the basis for defining the types of approaches analyzed here. The artists presented as examples all belong to the same generation, born between 1966 and 1978, and include the following: Lidia González-Zoilo, Amalia Fernández, Constanza Brcnic, María Jerez, Mònica Muntaner, Bea Fernández, Sonia Gómez, Paloma Calle, Ada Vilaró, and Marta Galán; some of the pieces by Victoria Szpunberg, Loreto Martínez Troncoso, and Pilar Albarracín are analyzed as well.
