Abstract

As functional linguistic units, connectors are specialized in linking different parts of a discourse and making explicit the argumentative relations between them. Chinese learners may face great difficulty in the acquisition of the Spanish connectors, because of their complicated properties in morphological, syntactic, semantic and discursive aspects, and due to the systematic differences between the two languages. The main aim of this thesis, divided into three sections, is to study the most difficult Spanish connectors to Chinese students, comparing them with the Chinese ones, and apply the results to the teaching of Spanish as a second language in China. The first section of the thesis explains the concept and the basic issues of connector in both languages and establishes a framework for the contrastive study of Spanish and Chinese connectors based on the references consulted. The second section includes a corpus study and a contrastive study. According to the statistics of our corpus, the causal and consecutive connectors are the most difficult ones to Chinese students, with highest number of error cases. Therefore, these two types of connectors are selected as objects of the contrastive study, in which we present the differences of Spanish and Chinese in several aspects and we offer a detailed description of these connectors. In the third section, we indicate the problems and shortage of the connectors teaching in China by revising the textbook mainly used. Based on the results of the corpus analyses and the contrastive study, we make some suggestions for the improvement of the Spanish connectors teaching and we also propose a series of exercises for the casual and consecutive connectors.
