Abstract

This investigation approaches architecture from a humanist point of view, analyzing social dialogue in relation to design processes and architectural production, which search for a balanced interaction between the built environment and its natural and cultural settings.
The first chapter looks into the origins of the always existing opposition between the natural and the artificial. With this in mind, architecture is considered as a 'second nature', one that is fit to meet mans needs, which go beyond functional and pragmatic issues, and include in a fundamental way the spiritual aspects, those which ultimately define our human nature.
In a second phase a historical-interpretative analysis is developed for a better understanding of the main practices in sustainable architecture over the past two decades of the 20th century. The term of 'sustainable development' is explained in detail in order to understand its influence on architecture, as well as on the different assessment methods for buildings of these characteristics.
To close the theoretical framework and also as the main chapter of the thesis, the concepts of dialogism and the hermeneutic trilogy (pre-figuration, con-figuration and re-figuration) developed by M. Bajtin and Paul Ricoeur respectively, are explored as a methodological structure to analyze and interpret a sustainable architecture. The idea is to bind dialogism and sustainability as one concept, in order to approach architecture in an integral and holistic way, and to try to visualize it as multidimensional cultural phenomena. Here, the main hypothesis is explained, one which establishes that both, biophysical and tangible factors, as well as social and intangible ones, are indispensable cultural parameters to consider when designing a truly sustainable architecture.
Under this framework of a dialogical sustainability, four architectural examples are studied, which were selected not only for their adequate relationship with their natural settings from a physical impact point of view, but simultaneously for the intangible bonds that link them in a strong and intentional way to the nature of the place. In this way, the design process is analyzed basically as an exercise of social communication. This allows an inter-subjective evaluation of architecture where the aesthetical, ethical and symbolical experiences between man and nature are exposed.
The thesis concludes explaining architecture's role as a bridge between man and his environment. One very important aspect that is highlighted is the architect's stance related to sustainable architecture, one that must go, based on the arguments contained in the investigation process, beyond fulfilling the ecological and low impact agendas, trying to respond as well, to man's spiritual needs, which architecture has the responsibility to include. Needs that are generally put on a second level in sustainable practices, because of their intangible and subjective character. In short, the fundamental idea is to bring man and nature closely together, through architecture, as a means to improve his life quality and at the same time guarantee the conservation of the natural environment.
